Thin Clients with Windows RemoteApp
Operating Cost Savings — Using Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, small businesses can take advantage of Microsoft’s Terminal Services and RemoteApp features that are included with the standard OS license at no additional charge. Everyday applications such as Adobe Professional Suite ® and popular accounting software can be centrally installed and managed on a robust server (or cluster of servers) and be accessed via low-cost thin client PCs. Users can run their applications over the LAN or WAN as if the execution took place at their workstation. The advantage of this solution lies in the fact that CPU time, memory, and storage are provisioned on the server while only the application interface is displayed on the client’s terminal.
Work from Branch Office or Home — Employees that work at branch offices or from home can run applications remotely, with the same local performance, without having to install software on their personal computers. Further, applications such as Intuit ® Quickbooks that rely on local database connections (and do not scale well across WANs) can be run remotely as all the data access and computation occurs on the central server.
Leverage Centralized Servers, Management, and Storage — System Administrators save time as software updates are managed centrally on a server rather than on each individual employee PC. Existing Windows XP and Vista Client PCs can be repurposed to run today’s resource intensive applications. There is no need to upgrade each employee PC when addressing user complaints about speed and application lag time. A 5-6 year old PC running Windows XP with a 1.0 Ghz Pentium ® 4 CPU can easily serve as a RemoteApp client for the most current version of resource intensive applications such as those included in Adobe ® Professional Suite.
Expectations to be realized
System administrators can focus financial resources and management efforts around building a robust server environment rather than upgrading individual employee workstations. Servers tend to offer more upgrade options after the initial purchase than desktop PCs, allowing for greater ROI.
Allows for new Thin PC terminals which cost a fraction of the price of new full-featured workstations for new employee setups.
Storage Networks can assist you with implementing a setup that maximizes your investement in software manufacturer user licensing requirements.
Cost Saving Features & Options Re-deployment or trade-in of older workstation assets should also be considered when upgrading to a Windows RemoteApp Solution. Consider completing a site assessment to learn how your company can cost effectively transition to a higher performance, centralized Terminal Services solution.
